Mind in Motion - Czech classic

Joy is the essential and final ingredient of science fiction,
the joy of discovery of newness.
Philip K. Dick

During the more trying times in the past few years, when I couldn’t muster the concentration to read, I set out searching for science fiction movies I hadn’t seen. That’s when I came across Karel Zeman’s magnificent 1958 black-and-white film, Invention for Destruction. It is available on YouTube with English subtitles and for the best possible price: free-99!

The story follows what happens when a gang of pirates abducts a scientist to get their hands on his futuristic weapon of mass destruction. What’s most delightful about this movie is its imaginative visual style, which combines live actors with stock footage and many kinds of animation. Based on Jules Verne’s novels, this internationally acclaimed movie is the most successful Czech film in history.

Speaking of Czechia, I’ll present a two-day in-person public Back Into Action workshop in Prague on the first weekend in May. I’m super excited because it will be my first time teaching this course in many years. You can find out more here.

(If you can’t attend the workshop, you will find the recordings and illustrated handbook on the Mind in Motion Online website.)

Today’s image comes from somewhere around the three-minute mark of the movie.

I also encourage you to watch Zelman’s fabulous The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, available on the incredible Internet Archive free of charge.
