True knowledge comes
with deep understanding of a topic
and its inner workings.
— Albert Einstein

I recently had the pleasure of teaching a version of the "Rolling the Head Between the Hands" Awareness Through Movement (ATM) lesson for the morning AAYAD (An AY a Day) peer study group.

What an incredible session it was! Our usual attendance more than doubled, a testament to the enduring interest in this particular lesson. The conversation that followed was lively, deep, and utterly fascinating. We explored a wide range of topics, including the biomechanics of the motion, Moshe Feldenkrais's presentation of the ATM, and how this action relates to the practice of Functional Integration (FI).

Unfortunately, I didn't record the session last month, which means that if you missed out, you won't find it in our archives.

However, if you're keen to explore this intriguing lesson, you're in luck! I taught a version of "Rolling the Head Between the Hands" in 2019, and the recording of that session is available for free in the Free Lessons/Alexander Yanai section of our website.

If you don’t have an account on the Mind in Motion Online website, you can sign up for a free account here. (If you are a Feldenkrais teacher or trainee, please sign up for a Become a Better Teacher account to access hundreds of free ATM transcripts, the digital version of my book, Articulating Changes, and other resources for free.)

Please note: I will be teaching a different version of this lesson for tomorrow morning’s (July 4th) AAYAD meeting.

Have you ever wondered why this seemingly simple movement holds such transformative power?

You’re not alone! The enthusiastic curiosity surrounding this lesson—its origins, best teaching practices, and hands-on applications—was immense. Despite our conversation running overtime, we only scratched the surface of its key points.

Given the profound interest in rolling the head, I thought it would be worthwhile to take a deep dive into the meaning, implications, and applications of this fundamental and profound Feldenkrais technique. The freedom and fluidity of head movement aren't just random indicators; as Feldenkrais himself stated, they're the hallmark of well-organized, efficient human movement. The action of rolling the head holds the key to unlocking meaningful improvements in balance, breathing, posture, coordination, and overall well-being.

That being the case, I am excited to announce an extended advanced course to investigate why this movement is so significant, explore its role in hands-on work, and reveal how it can truly enhance your students' learning — and your own.

I will be offering Unlocking the Power of ATM: Rolling the Head Between the Hands in two formats: as two weekday meetings, one week after the other, which allows for exploring ideas, observational viewpoints, and teaching tactics between sessions, or as a one-day weekend workshop, which provides a concentrated learning experience.
