The Power Within

What lies behind us
and what lies before us
are tiny matters compared to
what lies within us.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Where is Larry teaching this year’s Feldenkrais® Summer Camp?

A: Larry is teaching Feldenkrais® Summer Camp 2022 — The Power Within.

Summer camp happens entirely on Zoom, a video streaming service, to create a virtual workshop where you can see and hear him and the class attendees (who choose to have their cameras on). You can access every session on a smartphone, tablet, laptop, computer, or Internet-enabled TV; you can, should you choose, also join the meeting on the phone. The choice is yours.

Thanks to your camera and microphone, you’ll not only get to see and hear, but you’ll also be able to interact with him and other attendees. Sometimes, you’ll work with one or more of the other campers in a breakout group via the video service.

Suppose you haven’t had a chance to participate in online learning yet. In that case, you might not yet have experienced how this technology makes it possible to improve your abilities wherever you are, at home, at work, or on vacation. Even though the classes are happening in one physical location, you will find that the immediacy of video makes for smooth interaction and an uncanny sense of togetherness and camaraderie.

Q: What if I miss a session?

A: No worries.

Because we know you’re busy, we record each session. That way, if you miss part or all of the meeting or if part of the program doesn’t fit your schedule, we’ve got you covered.

We will make the video files available for you to watch, usually within  48 hours or less. This will allow you to catch up whenever, wherever, and on whatever device (smartphone, tablet, laptop, or desktop) works best for you.

Q: Are there breaks during the Summer Camp meetings?

A: Yes. Each summer camp session will include time for you to have something to drink or eat and take care of personal needs.

Q: How do we access the recordings of The Power Within?

A: You’ll receive access to the video recordings via the Mind in Motion online Library.

Q: How does the ATM® part of The Power Within work?

A: Following Larry’s step-by-step instructions, you’ll do the ATMs from wherever you are. As will all Feldenkrais classes, you’ll be asked to do unusual movements in often unfamiliar situations. These aren’t traditional exercises meant to increase strength, stretch, or develop endurance; instead, Summer Camp consists of a carefully sequenced series of lessons.

Depending on the lesson, you’ll be lying on your side, belly, or back, sitting, or standing. The lessons start simply and become incrementally more challenging as the series progresses.

Larry will draw from the lessons Dr. Feldenkrais taught during his weekly classes in the 1950s to 1970s in Tel Aviv, other courses, and professional training programs. This year’s camp curriculum consists of a curated selection of classic compositions adapted specifically for the Summer Camp series and a few original compositions.

Q: How difficult are the lessons?

A: This year, Larry will teach lessons ranging from easy to challenging.

Because this is a “suffering is optional approach” to improvement, you are encouraged to stay within your range of comfort and ease. Any movements are too challenging or difficult to do can be imagined.

Q: Is this a form of therapy?

A: No.

The Feldenkrais Method is somatic education, meaning it’s a way of listening to and learning from the inside out. In the classes, you learn to harness your nervous system’s ability to learn and benefit from the emotional consequences of connecting to the capacity to change.

Q: What else will we be doing during Summer Camp?

A: A couple of times along the way, you’ll get a chance to interact with other participants by engaging in interactive learning activities. Not only will you have an opportunity to learn from and with each other, but you’ll find out how to take what you learn into life.

Q: How long is an ATM lesson?

A: Lessons last anywhere from 40 to 60 minutes.

Q: What’s the schedule for the meetings?

A: Summer Camp consists of two tracks: Pacific and Atlantic. Each parallel session covers the same material. You can attend either class, or if your schedule permits, you are welcome to participate in both sessions.

Each session will last between two hours and forty-five minutes and three hours.

Q: Do we have to attend the live session? Or will it be enough to review the recordings?

A: That’s entirely up to you and how you prefer to learn.

Larry teaches so that the recordings provide a solid basis for learning on your own. That said, as part of our mission to foster a community of learners, we offer these extended live programs to make interaction and collaborative learning possible.

Q: How long do I have to complete the course?

A: There’s no deadline for completing the course.

Your tuition gives you lifetime access to the ATM videos along with the group activities and discussions. Larry teaches the lessons twice and we make the better version of one available. (So you know, the breakout groups are not recorded.)

This means you will be able to go through the material at your own pace and on your own time. You can backtrack, review, and proceed as the class unfolds.

Q: Do we receive any kind of certificate at the end of the course?

A: Because there are no tests or quizzes and because we do not take attendance, we have no basis for granting certificates of completion.

Q: Will you be offering The Power Within again?

A: We have no plan to do so. Larry has developed a unique theme for summer camp each year. He does make the courses available as workshops, live and online — please contact the Mind in Motion office if you would like to sponsor a course.

Q: What if I can’t attend?

A: You do not have to attend the live sessions. You can access the recordings via the Mind in Motion Online Library at your convenience and do the lessons at your own pace.

Q: What if I want how Larry teaches?

You can access the recordings of Larry’s teaching via the Mind in Motion Online Library. You’ll also find a no-cost collection of Larry’s classes in the Free ATMs section of the Mind In Motion website. To access these resources:

  1. Log into your Mind in Motion Online (MIMO) account.
  2. And then click here

(If you haven’t joined the website yet, it’s quick and easy to create your entirely free public Improve My Abilities (IMA) account here. Your account will give you access to other free lessons, the Lesson Locator, and the digital version of Larry’s book, Articulating Changes, all at no cost whatsoever to you.

If you’re a Feldenkrais Teacher or Trainee, you can also request a professional Become a Better Teacher account, which includes more valuable learning materials — all free of charge.)

  • Before you do the lesson, please note that it is neither medical care nor treatment. If you have any concerns about whether you should do it or not, consult with your physician.
  • After doing the lessons offered, we’re curious to hear from you about your experience.

Once you have a MIMO account, it’s easy to access these free classes at any time. You can do that by signing in to your account, going to the Library section, and then selecting Free ATMs.
